Thiruvananthapuram: Birds, costly and colourful, have arrived in the city to spruce up this festive season. The exhibition pavilion of the Animal Husbandry Department alongside the Onam-Ramzan metro bazaar at Putharikandam ground is already drawing public in large numbers to the exotic birds and snowy white rabbits.
The exhibition has 18 stalls set up by the Livestock Management Training Centre, Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Palode and Central Hatchery, Chengannur.
According to Dr Prem Jain who is associated with the project 'World of Rabbits' initiated by City Corporation, the move of the organisers will give an impetus to the poultry business, which is yet to gain momentum in the city.
Different varieties of exotic birds brought from various parts of the world grab the attention of the visitors. Green-winged Macaw, a native of Panama, is the key attraction. The bird may be enchanting with its long tail, sharp beaks and red feathers.
However, the price tagged at the cage will repel even an ardent bird lover. The beauty costs Rs 2,40,000 for a pair. The neighbour is no less expensive.
The dazzling white Umbrella Cockatoo comes from Indonesia and costs Rs 1,40,000. Another variant of the bird is Crested Cockatoo, which appears as if it is carved out of white marble.
