Kasargod Special Branch, with the help of Cyber Police, have arrested a resident of New Delhi in connection with the ATM robbery in the state. The accused, Sandip Chopra, 26, was arrested by the team in Delhi on Sunday.
The accused have confessed to stealing Rs 1.10 crore from ATMs across the state, the police said.
The accused was nabbed following a complaint at Kasargod Police Station by Railway Ticket Examiner Umashankar. Sandip had stolen Rs 27,070 from his account.
According to police officials, Sandip met Umashankar at Kasargod Railway Station and said he had lost his belongings during a train journey to UP in Rajdhani Express from Shoranur and requested him for help on July 20, 2012. Umashankar, after hearing the story, withdrew money from his account at the ATM situated at Kasargod Railway Station in the presence of Sandip. But later, Sandip, using fake ATM cards stole money from Umashankar’s account, the police said.
The police team, with the help of Cyber Police, successfully tracked Sandip in Baroda, and then the arrest was made.
Sandip was later produced before the Kasargod Chief Judicial Magistrate and was remanded in judicial custody, the police said.
