Beijing: Achanta Sharath Kamal provided some joy to the Indian contingent when the table tennis player won his first round match 4-2 against Spain's Alfredo Carneros on Tuesday.
The Indian paddler got off to a poor start losing the first game 6-11. But he got his act back together very quickly to gain the upper hand against Carneros with whom the he has been playing together at Spain's San Sabastian Club for the last two years.
Slowing down the game to tackle his opponent, Sharath won the next two games. Carneros, however, levelled the score winning the fourth game.
Sharath came back to take the next two and win the match 6-11, 12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7 at the Peking University Gymnasium.
In all probability, the Melbourne Commonwealth Games gold medallist will now take on Australian Weixing Chen, who has beaten the Indian before.
However, if Sharath manages to win against Chen, then he would be pitted against world No. 1 Hao Wang of China.
