The death of 25-year-old Delhi girl Preeti Rathi in Mumbai has once again focussed the country's attention on this heinous crime. What measures are immediately necessary to put an end to this crime? Pragya Singh, campaign coordinator, Stop Acid Attacks joined IBNLive readers for an interaction on the matter.
Q. I just came to know that the acid these criminals use is of a different strength and variety than the ones we use for domestic use. Then how do they get hold of that? It must be stopped at the supply level first. Asked by: Suprabha
A. Dear Suprabha, Sulfuric, hydrochloric and Nitric acid are the ones which has a catastrophic effect on the human flesh. Even the Sulpuric acid we use at house to clean toilet is in concentrated form. It causes the skin tissue to melt, often exposing the bones below the flesh, sometimes even dissolving the bone. When acid attacks the eyes, it damages these vital organs permanently.
Q. Why don't the Govt Ban Acid in the market? There was an instance in Hyderabad where three guys threw acid on a girl and govt dealt so strongly with it by a fake encounter. Though it was a fake encounter it send a tough message in the city and no more acid attack happened in the city. In a country where law takes its own sweet time govt has to use these type of measures only. Asked by: mamta
A. Dear mamta, from the survey we did in last three months we found 16 acid attacks reported by media. we assume that there would be many acid attacks that goes unreported. we demand for a stringent law against this offense. Acid is being used like a weapon to ruin a girl's life. Banning acid is not possible, because there are several fields where acid is needed for research purposes..in school, research centers, chemical Industries. We want the government to regulate the acid sale in Retail.
Q. Is it possible to bring any stringent laws on atrocities against women including rape, sexual assault, acid attacks, etc whilst our parliament is mostly consisting of corrupts criminals, thugs, rapists? Asked by: Vinod K R
A. Yes, it is possible Vinod. we need few amendments in the law. acid attack should be considered as an attempt to murder. acid attacks leaves a victim financially, physically and mentally shattered. and if the government is not emphasizing to it, we need to make the government understand how awful is the affects of this offense.
Q. I think, every body is very weak when it comes to "how to handle refusal", usually men treat it as personal loss rather than looking at the fact that, other person also has a choice. Schools can play a key role in preventing these happenings. Asked by: S ESHWAR
A. Indeed! what an idea...to teach young boys to respect every girl, their friend, sister, mother.
Q. Acid attack is the last resort as jilted lover takes. Before that certain events would have definitely happened which the victim may not be sharing with others. Focus, should be on how to understand when things are going out of control and tell at least a couple of close acquaintances of such a relationship going sour. This might help to some extent. Asked by: S ESHWAR
A. Yes Eshwar, this might can help to some extend. but we found many cases where in the girl denied to talk to the guy one day and the other day he poured acid on her. Should be a girl b so cautious in her talking and behaviour. She then cannot live and think freely. In my case, I got married 10 days ago and was traveling, I never knew the intention of a married man who loved me and was angry when I got married.how could i make out in this huge world who loves me and is not happy for my marriage to a guy I wanted to be with, very difficult.
Q. Why can't we reply in the style - an eye for an eye? Why cant we pour a drum of acid on the accused? Let him endure the same pain and torment. Please let us amend the law. No human rights prevention for these inhumans. Asked by: Sujeet Sharma
A. I wish we could! Eye for an eye, acid for acid...wow sounds so inhuman but I wish I could throw acid on the person who did this to me. But sadly I cannot. I am not in Iran. So I cannot demand for it. But I don't want the accused to ever come out of jail. Why only 14 years of imprisonment? Rigorous imprisonment till death is what I demand for all the convicts. No lame family sentiments and responsibility excuse. Where were their emotions and responsibility when they thought of putting acid on somebody's face? You have a criminal mind of taking revenge and destroying a girl's face how can you be innocent and jovial?
Q. Can't there be restrictions on availability of these acids? How difficult is it to implement any such restriction? Asked by: Narayan
A. Yes, there could be a regulation on acid sale. 1) the one who is selling should sale under license and the one who is buying should produce a proper ID proof, address proof and a valid reason why he wants the acid. 2) secondly not all the researches needs concentrated acid. so where required diluted acid should be kept and used example- in schools etc.
Q. Why don't the Govt Ban Acid in the market? There was an instance in Hyderabad where three guys threw acid on a girl and govt dealt so strongly with it by a fake encounter. A. Mamta, government cannot simply ban acid in the market.govt have an excuse that it is used so commonly in every household and researches. we want researches to find out the alternatives of these corrosive acid for research centers , if there is any. or else , we want t to be regulated. by selling it under license and it should not be available so easily. one has to produce proper ID proof, address Proof and a valid reason for buying the acid. Just like govt regulated the sell of Pistols, AK 47 because these were used as a weapon to kill anybody.
Q. Use media and channels to spread awareness and use Branding as a strategy where use a theme that 'A real Indian Man is ...' . Make civil mannerism as a part of School and college curriculum and offices too. Robe in a Big stars to spread mesasge on the channels and restrict on censor board as still there is a huge gap between Rural and Urban India. Asked by: mamta
A. What an idea Mamta!!! we are implementing all of them. Soon you will see the results. But sadly the psychopaths who does these offense are mostly the ones who never went to good schools and always had a bad company. No good upbringing or failure in every step of life or a very bad childhood are also the reasons the boys turns into monsters/criminals.
Q. But once u start these campaigns on the TV and spread the awareness, there would be some change as one change we had seen which was today woman are coming out and reporting the cases of atrocities. Start these campaigns and the Branding strategy, it will atleast effect some part of population. Asked by: mamta k
A. Definitely there would be some changes in thought process of society and the boys specially. we are already in the process. its just that we don't have so many resources and funds. we don't rely on Govt for it. all we want is the support of our society...for make it possible. there is no Dedicated organization before SAA to initiate there kind of researches on acid attacks.
