The President's security staff had to cut short her first public interaction.

Sao Paulo: The security staff of President Pratibha Patil, India's first woman President on Monday had to cut short her first public interaction on her maiden foreign tour as the crowd became unmanageable.

It was a rare photo opportunity for dozens of Indians in the commercial capital of Brazil as 73-year-old Patil began the first leg of her three nation tour to Latin America.

After her inaugural speech at the reception hosted in her honour, the organisers of the function, possibly surprised at an early end of the meeting, asked all those who had gathered to line up for a photo op with Patil.

Pratibha Patil is the first woman head of the state of India and was voted in by an enormous margin. A total of 682 MPs and 3,755 MLAs cast their ballots and seven states and union territories registered a 100 per cent voter turnout during the presidential elections last year.

She defeated nearest rival — NDA-backed vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat — by more than three lakh votes.

After she won the coveted seat, Pratibha Patil described her victory as a ‘victory of principles and victory of right thinking’ by the people.

The President, who had been then haunted by unsubstantiated Opposition charges of corruption, fraud and improprieties, won almost 11,000 more votes than expected.
