A young man’s mother was allegedly abducted by the parents of his girlfriend after the couple eloped from their village near Morappur in Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu.
The girl’s parents abducted the man’s mother in an attempt to force the couple out of hiding.
The 23-year-old woman, from the Gounder (OBC) community, and her 24-year-old boyfriend, from the SC community, both worked and studied in Bengaluru. They eloped on Tuesday night, prompting the girl’s family to file a missing person report.
According to an Indian Express report, two police teams are currently searching for both the couple and the girl’s parents, who have disappeared after locking their house and switching off their phones.
A senior officer overseeing the case revealed that the situation escalated when the girl’s parents, upon realising their daughter was missing, redirected their frustration toward the young man’s mother.
“Both the woman and the man are well educated – the latter is a graduate in agriculture sciences. They suspected the young man but were unable to reach him on the phone. Then they turned their frustration towards his mother,” the officer said.
Describing the abduction, the officer noted that the young man’s mother was unaware of the elopement and was shocked when the girl’s parents visited her the following day, Wednesday.
“On learning that her son had eloped, the young man’s mother was shocked. She tried to call her son but the phone was switched off. She had little time to process the situation. Without much ado, the woman’s parents informed her of their daughter’s elopement with her son and allegedly took her with them – though no violence was involved,” the officer explained.
However, the young man’s mother was later rescued by a special police team.
