AIIMS docs begin strike against quota
Hospital doctors association opposes Lok Sabha passes OBC quota Bill, says it will talk with colleagues outside.

New Delhi: Resident doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday night began a hunger against the Lok Sabha passing a Bill which reserves 27 per cent seats for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central government-aided educational institutions.

Fifteen members of the Resident Doctors Association’s (RDA) executive committee are on strike, said spokesperson Dr Anil Sharma.

Sharma said the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Bill, 2006, does not contain the Veerappa Moily committee suggestion that the new reservation must be introduced in a phased manner.

Sharma said the RDA’s general body will meet on Thursday to decide its plan and to contact other medical practitioners' associations.

Students of professional colleges Delhi and other major cities had opposed the Bill when HRD Minister Arjun Singh introduced it earlier this year.

Government medical colleges in many parts of the country went on 17-day protest in May.
