Air passengers to pay fee for flying out of Delhi
Rs 200 will be levied on domestic fliers and Rs 1,300 on international fliers.

New Delhi: The Government has approved levy of a development fee from passengers flying out of Delhi to help the airport manager GMR meet a Rs 1,827 crore shortfall in modernisation expenses.

A fee of Rs 200 would be levied on domestic passengers and Rs 1,300 on international passengers beginning March 1.

The fee would be levied for 36 months.

Delhi International Airport Ltd, the GMR-led consortium that is upgrading the airport here, becomes the first operator in the country to levy such a fee to be collected on a temporary basis.

The Government has so far approved User Development Fee for new airports in Hyderabad and Bangalore, which is of a permanent nature.

The development fee would be levied in addition to the ticket charges.

The development fee (DF), which is being levied "purely on an ad hoc basis", would be applicable for 36 months only, an official spokesperson said, adding it would be inclusive of all applicable taxes. It is expected to cover an estimated shortfall of Rs 1,827 crore.

The levy, to be reviewed after six months, comes in the wake of DIAL informing the Civil Aviation Ministry that it expected a "substantial shortfall" in implementing the Rs 8,975 crore Master Plan.
