Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence awarded to three people in the Akshardham Temple attack case of 2002 in Ahmedabad.
A two-member division bench of Justices RM Doshit and KM Thakar upheld the sentence given to the six convicts by a Special POTA Court in July 2006 which conducted the trial in the Akshardham Temple attack case. The Special POTA Court had awarded death sentence to three people, life sentence to one, 10 years imprisonment to one and five years to one of the convict.
On July 1, 2006, special POTA court judge Sonia Gokani had sentenced to death Adam Ajmeri, Shaan Miya alias Chand Khan Sajjadkhan from Bareilly and Mufti Abdul Qayyum Mansuri.
While a local youth from Dariapur area of Ahmedabad, Mohammed Salim Shaikh was sentenced to life imprisonment, Abdulmiyan Qadri was given a 10-year term and Altaf Hussain was handed down five-year imprisonment.
Two terrorists, Murtuza Hafiz Yasin and Ashraf Ali Mohammed Farooq, had stormed the temple premises on September 25, 2002, killing 33 people.
Both the attackers, alleged to be members of Pakistan-based terror organisation Lashkar-e-Toiba, were killed in by the security forces.
The Special POTA court had convicted six persons for providing logistic support to the two terrorists.
