Al Qaeda plot to assassinate Musharraf foiled
Qaeda operatives have been captured and a huge cache of weapons recovered.

Karachi: Pakistan intelligence agencies on Wednesday claimed to have foiled an al Qaeda plot to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf and have arrested some activists of the global terrorist network.

According to sources, the intelligence agencies on a tip-off raided a militant hideout in Malir area of Karachi and arrested members of the al Qaeda, Online news agency said.

A huge cache of ammunition and weapons was claimed to have been recovered from the arrested terrorists, the news agency reported.

Sources said that the terrorists during their interrogation revealed that they were plotting to kill Musharraf during his next visit to Karachi.

They confessed that they were planning to blow up the entire bridge on Drig Road at the precise moment when Musharraf's convoy was to reach there while coming from Karachi airport to Shahrah-e-Faisal.

The arrested militants revealed that their group was also planning to target army installations and foreign embassies and kidnap influential personalities to press their demand for releasing their jailed accomplices.

The revelations have forced the security agencies to tighten security around sensitive buildings and of VIPs, according to the news agency.
