Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said Tamil Nadu was plundered and law and order had deteriorated during the DMK regime...

TIRUCHY: AIADMK leader and Chief Minister on Sunday night unleashed a blistering attack on DMK  while campaigning for Tiruchy West bypoll candidate M Paranjothi.Former minister and DMK candidate K N Nehru was only following the footsteps of his leader M Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa said. The DMK headquarters in Chennai was built on 4.5 acres of land which was obtained by coercion from the family of Pennalurpet Zamindar, she said.In 1972, during the DMK regime, a notice was issued, threatening that the land would be acquired by the government under the Land Ceiling Act. One of the Zamin’s heirs, Subburathinam Naidu, was summoned and told that the land would be acquired without any compensation if he did not hand it over to the DMK Trust. As Naidu succumbed to the threats, the land was given to the DMK Trust in 1972. Among the 10 heirs to the property, only Naidu had signed the sale deed and he had no rights to sell it. This was stated in the report of the Sarkaria Commission, which went into the irregularities of the DMK government, Jayalalithaa said.Similarly,  Kalaignar Arivalayam, DMK office in Tiruchy, was built on the land that belonged to the Wakf Board, she said.Following complaints from the people, special cells for prevention of land grabbing were constituted and 25 special courts formed.A total of 17,431 complaints were received and 718 cases were registered. A total of 255 persons had been arrested and `624.66 crore- worth of lands had been retrieved, she said.Tamil Nadu is moving in a prosperous path, she said. “I guarantee that the AIADMK candidate Paranjothi would be one among you and work for your wellbeing,” she assured and exhorted people to force Nehru to forefeit his deposit in the by-election. Listing out the welfare schemes implemented by her government during the last five months, she said the government had distributed four grams of gold for mangalsutra as promised and started the free rice scheme for the benefit of the poor. Old-age pension and marriage assistance had been provided and laptops were provided to students. The free mixie, grinder and fan scheme had already been launched and cattle were being provided to poor families. The financial assistance for fishermen had been increased to `2,000 from `1,000, while Arasu Cable was being provided at a low cost. “The aim of the AIADMK government is to raise the living standards of the people”, she said.Jayalalithaa said Tamil Nadu was plundered and law and order had deteriorated during the DMK regime. After the AIADMK came back to power, Tamil Nadu, which was a chaotic jungle, had been transformed into a peaceful garden, the Chief Minister said. “Powercuts are being reduced stage-by-stage and I will make Tamil Nadu a State without powercuts by next year,” she said.
