BHUBANESWAR:The Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital is planning to start labour analgesia procedures to enable painless birth in pregnant women.Use of analgesics and anaesthesia to provide painless labour and birth has been gaining currency across the world with studies in the US and the UK revealing that almost the bulk of women going into labour are opting for analgesics or anaesthesia to go through the delivery without suffering pain. The hospital would bring in state-of-the-art procedures and infrastructure to ensure delivery of babies, both normal and through Cesarean section without causing any pain to the mother, interventional anaesthesiologist and pain specialist of the hospital Dr Shovan Kumar Rath said.“The Pain clinic of the hospital also plans to introduce spinal cord stimulator and continuous spinal cord drug delivery pump implantation for various painful conditions to raise the treatment of pain to international standards”, Dr Rath said. The clinic, the first of its kind in the private sector in the State, has brought advanced pain relieving procedures like Ozone therapy to treat a wide range of painful conditions. It has also started percutaneous discectomy probe, the latest minimal invasive technique, to treat chronic back pain.“This technique combined with Ozone therapy is an effective alternative to open surgery,” he said.
