Ralegan Siddhi: Social activist Anna Hazare on Friday took strong exception to the I-T department's notice to his key aide Arvind Kejriwal and asked the Government not "to play mischief" with a man of integrity and character.
"The government is playing khilwad (mischief) with Arvind and it is not good. I got a phone call from him this afternoon. They are questioning him about something after a gap of four years," he said.
The 74-year-old anti-corruption crusader was addressing a Gram Sabha at Ralegan Siddhi in western Maharashtra in his first public appearance after being discharged from a Gurgaon hospital.
"I have seen Arvind from close quarters. He is doing a selfless service for society. He could have made money if he wanted to, but he is not like that...," Hazare said.
"If such things are happening, the civil society will be compelled again to take a different path."
Hazare, however, did not elaborate on what he meant by "taking a different path."
The I-T Chief Commissioner last month issued a notice to Kejriwal, who resigned from the Indian Revenue Service, to clear the dues totalling Rs 9.27 lakh.
Kejriwal, an RTI activist who played a key in talks between the Government and Team Anna over the Lokpal, has denied the charge.
"I have not violated any study leave bond norm as a government employee," he said in Delhi.
