KOCHI: The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Podiatric Surgery at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has introduced ‘Anodyne Therapy,’ a new form of therapy for diabetic neuropathy. Anodyne therapy uses an anodyne device which emits monochromatic near infrared photo energy through light emitting diodes (LEDS) in contact with the skin. These light emitting pads are applied to the surface of the skin. When the affected body part is exposed to this light, it dilates the blood vessels thus increasing blood circulation and reducing pain. This is particularly useful for relieving pain in the feet due to diabetic neuropathy.Treatment using anodyne therapy improves movements of the extremities, lymphatic drainage, venous dilation and blood flow to the lower limbs.
