New Delhi: An Australian girl, who was shot at by an Indian man, succumbed to her injuries in Vrindavan near Mathura, Australia's TheAge.com reported on Tuesday.

Twenty-six-year-old Leela was shot at by Saurav (28) on Saturday after an arguement. Saurav — the nephew of a former cabinet minister in Uttar Pradesh — later committed suicide by firing a shot from a revolver to his temple.

The family claims that Saurav was stalking Leela and that though they had complained to the police, the police had taken no action against him.

The police however, claim that it was a lover's tiff that went horribly wrong.

Leela was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Agra, but doctors were unable to remove bullet fragments that had lodged themselves in her brain.

She was then shifted to a guesthouse in Vrindavan where she was surrounded by family and members of the Vrindavan Hare Krishna community — of which she was a follower.

She died of heart failure as a result of her injuries.

The incident took place at around 0200 hrs (IST) near ISKCON temple in Raman Reti area of Vrindavan.

"Leela was a resident of Perth in Australia. She had been staying in India for the past 10 years, though she did not belong to any ISKCON mission," the SSP of Mathura, Ram K Cahturvedi said.

The SSP was quoted by agencies as saying that the revolver belonged to Saurav's father and had been seized.

Police have decided to drop the inverstigation into the case, saying that since Saurav was already dead, there was no point in further pursuing the case.
