A public interest petition has been filed in the High Court seeking immediate ban on immersion of idols made with plaster of Paris or use of chemical paints to prevent water bodies such as lakes, reservoirs, ponds, canals and rivers in the state from becoming polluted.
Petitioner B Venkata Papa Rao, a former IAS officer and member of the Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (Intach), requested the court to direct collectors and police superintendents of all the 23 districts of the state to implement the guidelines prescribed in The Guidelines for Idol Immersion, 2010 issued by the Central Pollution Control Board of the Union ministry of environment and forest.
He also wanted constitution of an action committee to oversee immersion and encouragement to use of eco-friendly materials like clay and natural colours in the making of idols.
The petitioner further wanted steps adhering to court orders passed in the T Ramakrishna Rao principal secretary and others
