BANGALORE: A large number of people including young women, students from various colleges, members of NGOs, community-based organisations of women in sex work, sexual minorities, people living with HIV and general public took part in an event to observe the World AIDS Day here on Thursday at Freedom Park. The park witnessed multitude of activities and several stalls that aimed to create education and awareness on HIV/AIDS among people.
The event included blood donation camps for volunteers, condom demonstrations and display of brochures on HIV/AIDS. The celebrations kept volunteers busy with them talking to participants and spreading awareness on HIV infection prevention and safe sex, while many others were busy in education related activities. Nearly 103 people underwent HIV/AIDS tests, while few donated blood in the three stalls.
“We are seeing very few people in our stall as the age for blood donation is above 18 years. However girls who intended to donate blood were turned away as most of them had low haemoglobin levels,” said a volunteer at the blood donation camp. Holding banners, posters and badges, several took part in the rallies to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS. Showcasing the significance of condom to prevent infection, a huge collage of condoms was on display.
Addressing the audience on the theme ‘Onde Hejje’, Kannada actor Ganesh said, “Just step into a HIV testing centre to protect yourself from the disease.”
