Karnataka High Court disposed of the writ petition, seeking declaration of the controversial resolution as 'null and void'.

Belgaum: The Karnataka government on Tuesday said it would supersede the Belgaum City Corporation.

The decision was taken in view of the recently passed resolution by the Corporation for seeking the merger of Marathi-speaking areas with Maharashtra and failing to take up development works.

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday disposed of the writ petition, seeking declaration of the controversial resolution as 'null and void' and 'illegal'.

The bench, comprising Justice N K Sodhi and Mr Justice N Kumar, observed that the petition was being disposed of in the wake of the state government superseding the Corporation.

City-based advocate A V Amaranathan filed the petition.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Cr P C have been put out for 48 hours in three places in the district as a precautionary measure.

The orders have been clamped in Belgaum city, Belgaum district and Khanapur city.

Official sources said that no incidents of violence was reported in the city, barring some stray incidents of stone pelting.

Meanwhile, members of the Maharashtra Ekikarana Samithi will meet in Belgaum on Wednesday to work out a strategy to counter the government's decision.
