Belgaum may be second K'taka capital
The Karnataka government has now proposed to make the disputed border town the second capital of the state.

Bangalore: The battle for Belgaum has intensified further. The Karnataka government has now proposed to make the disputed border town the second capital of the state.

There's been an ongoing dispute between Karnataka and the neighbouring state of Maharashtra over Belgaum district.

Before 1956, Belgaum was a part of the then Bombay state. Maharashtra still claims that Belgaum belongs to it.

A small group of Karnataka legislators have demanded that Belgaum be merged with Maharashtra.

The Karnataka goverment is currently holding a special five-day session in Belgaum.

However, Maharashtra is not taking things lying down.

The Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti in Belgaum is planning a parallel convention to pressurise Karnataka but their demand of merging Belgaum with Maharashtra has the support of just two MLAs out of 224.

The Karnataka cabinet has yet to approve the proposal for a second capital in Belgaum, but the Karnataka government's intentions are clear: it's telling Maharashtra to stay out of Belgaum
