The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would be coming up with various efforts to increase the score of city biodiversity index of greater Hyderabad from 29 to 32 plus in near future through making necessary changes to the ongoing programmes in the city.
To increase the index, GHMC initiated certain activities like constitution of biodiversity management committee, developing partnerships on the biodiversity management with the reputed institutions like UN agencies, universities, developing theme parks with native species, reintridction of extinct fish into the urban lakes etc. This would help in improving score up to 12.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu said that the city secured a score of 29 out of 90 considering 23 indicators. He said, it is a respectable for Hyderabad and GHMC will further improve the score by involving various stake holders. Brussels capital of Belgium has secured a highest score of 55.
In order to have complete data, GHMC is preparing the biodiversity index with the help of various agencies. The Greater Hyderabad City Biodiversity Index (CBI) covering the GHMC limits spread across Medak, Rangareddy and Hyderabad districts will be released on October 15 during the City for Life Summit as part of on-going global biodiversity conference, Krishna Babu said.
GHMC was first in the country to come out with the biodiversity index spread across 625 kilometres. The CBI will be released by union minister for urban development Kamalnath, who will inaugurate the summit.
