Bird flu spreads to new areas of West Bengal
Bird flu was first reported from the districts of Birbhum and South Dinajpur.

New Delhi: Bird flu spread to new areas of Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal even as culling of the birds in places affected by the disease continued at a slow pace.

West Bengal Animal Resources Development Minister Anisur Rahaman said that the bird flu had spread to Kirnahar in Birbhum district and Barwan in Murshidabad district in the last 24 hours.

He said there were also reports of poultry deaths in neighbouring Burdwan, South 24 Parganas and Nadia districts but bird flu symptoms have not been found.

Unusual bird deaths have been reported from Nadia district, Kalna block of Bardhaman district and another village in South 24 Pargana district.

Total bird mortality so far was 61,075 with fresh cases being reported from Khargram and Burwan block in Murshidabad district.

There is no official confirmation from West Bengal government so far.

The state government has deployed 58 rapid response teams for carrying out the culling operations and the number of birds culled so far is 11,225.

"First phase of culling will be over in next five to six days," Pradeep Kumar, Animal Husbandry Secretary said.
