BO Quarterly Report: Hits 'n' Flops so far
Shockingly only a few got thumbs up out of 43 releases

We are at the end of the first quarter of 2010 and so far approximately 43 Hindi films have hit the silver screen. We are an industry which churns out more than 450 films a year which in itself is a record. There are only two major entertainment for the people of this country; movies and cricket. Every Friday, several films attempt to woo the audiences but not all of them succeed. Let’s have a look at the hits and misses of the first quarter of 2010.

JANUARY – Total releases - Nine

HIT: Ishqiya

AVERAGE: Veer, Rann, Chance Pe Dance

FLOPS: Dulha Mil Gaya, Pyaar Impossible, Bhavnao Ko Samjho, The Waiting Room, Road to Sangam

January started dull as far as numbers are concerned as there were only nine movies up for release. However, the audience had reasons to cheer for as a variety of films were thrown to them like Veer, Ishqiya, Rann, Dulha Mil Gaya, Pyaar Impossilbe, Chance Pe Dance, Bhavnao Ko Samjho. Road to Sangam and The Waiting Room. Among all these films, only Ishqiya turned out to be victorious and Vishal Bhardwaj was the man of the month. Films like Veer and Rann also had their little share of success at the box office.

FEBRUARY- Total releases - 11

HITS: My Name is Khan, Karthik Calling Karthik

AVERAGE: Teen Patti, Toh Baat Pakki, Striker

FLOPS: The Hangman, Phaans Ek Jasoos Ki Kahani, Pyaar Ka Funda, Sukhmani, Aakhari Decision, Click

February’s figure was little better. Total 11 movies released in that month. The most hyped film in February was My Name is Khan starring one of the biggest stars of the country, Shah Rukh Khan. The film was dragged into unwanted controversy. The film was declared a hit but the audience had mixed reaction. Striker, The Hangman, Phaans Ek Jasoos Ki Kahani, Pyaar Ka Funda, Sukhmani and Aakhari Decision went unnoticed. Karthik Calling Karthik and Teen Patti released on the same day but it was Farhan and Deepika’s pairing that grabbed the major pie. Click and Toh Baat Pakki didn’t create any interest.

MARCH- Total releases – 17

HITS: Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge

AVERAGE: Shaapit, LSD, Thanks Maa, Right Yaa Wrong, Well Done Abba, Road Movie

FLOPS: Hello Zindagi, Rokkk, Idiot Box, Lahore, Swaha, Trump Card, Mittal v/s Mittal, Prem Kaa Game, My Friend Ganesh 3, Hide and Seek

March was better than February as17 films released in that month. Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge was the only big release of that month and after My Name is Khan, it was the only film which raked in big moolah at the box office. The films which didn’t survive at the box office were Hello Zindagi, Rokkk, Idiot Box, Swaha, Trump Card, Mittal v/s Mittal, Prem Kaa Game and Na Ghar Ka Na Ghaat Ka. Sunny Deol starrer Right Yaa Wrong did well in single screens. However, there were a handful of them which stood out because of the content. Dibakar Banerjee’s Love, Sex aur Dhokha recovered the money on the first day as it was a low budget film and it managed to make its presence felt at least for a week from the time of its release. Arshad Warsi’s debut venture Hum Tum aur Ghost was ordinary. Shaapit had a good opening but was quickly shown the door. Lahore showed a lot of promise but it was only appreciated in festival circuit. Shyam Benegal’s Well Done Abba was appreciated by everyone while Dev Benegal’s Road Movie was critically acclaimed.

The only animated film released so far in this quarter was My Friend Ganesha 3.

April- Total releases – Six

HITS: Prince

AVERAGE: The Great Indian Butterfly, Tum Milo Toh Sahi

FLOPS: Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hain, Pankh, Sadiyaan

Prince marked the return of Vivek Oberoi in the month of April. The film which released on April 9 has stunts on the lines of Hollywood and is doing surprising well. The single screens provided the much needed fluid to this expensive film. Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai didn’t stand a chance in front of Prince. Nana Patekar and Dimple Kadapia’s Tum Milo Toh Sahi provided a good entertainment for those who saw the film. But the problem was that not many people saw the film. The month witnessed a few art house films as well. Sanjay Gupta’s The Great Indian Butterfly was a decent watch however Pankh was a waste of an interesting script. Luv Sinha’s debut vehicle Sadiyaan didn’t travel any distance.

Let’s hope, the next quarter has more and more hit films.
