Singur (West Bengal): Two days after Tata Motors launched construction work at its proposed Rs 1-lakh car plant site, tension gripped Singur once again as some unidentified persons threw bombs and attempted to set on fire nine wooden posts in the fenced area of the land acquired for the small car project.

Police personnel patrolling the project site doused the fire immediately and there was no major damage. The incident occurred early on Tuesday.

In fact, this was the second such incident after the start of construction work at the site on Sunday. According to top police officials, the identity of those involved in the attack could not be ascertained immediately as they fled under the cover of darkness before the police could reach the spot.

The Singur plant site has been under tight security surveillance ever since the land acquisition by the state government sparked off strong protest by rights activists, political parties and farmers. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC is in force in the area, which would continue till January 28.

After Tuesday's incidents, security has been further stepped up in the entire area and patrolling has been intensified. The Director of Industries of West Bengal Government, M V Rao, said earth-filling work on the project would start shortly and 500 labourers will be engaged for the job.

Trinamool Congress has denied the hand its activist in the incident. "Our party is not involved in the incident. If we were involved, we would have acknowledged it openly," a TC leader told PTI.
