The police arrested five CPM workers in connection with an incident in which the national flag was burnt at Chokli on Wednesday.
Five flags of Congress also were set afire. The CPM workers arrested for burning the national flag were Koratti Meethal Sreejin, Jattil Prambath Sreepin, Kattilparambath Shajil, K Sarath and Koratti Veetil Sanesh.
They were remanded to 14 days in judicial custody by the court. Meanwhile, the arrested CPM workers alleged that they were beaten up by the police at the Panur Station. They made a complaint in the court in this connection.
Three CPM Men Held
Three CPM activists were arrested for disrespecting the tricolour at Chayom Chaklia Colony in Nileshwaram in Kasargod district on the eve of the Independence Day on Wednesday.
The arrested were identified as Branch member K Balan, 35, Chaklia Branch secretary Biju, 27, and Chayom local committee member P Gangadhaaran, 61. They were arrested under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act 1971 for lowering the national flag hoisted at Chayom town, the police said.
The Nileshwaram Police arrested the trio on receiving a complaint from P A Umeshan, who hoisted the tricolour in the colony. As per the complaint, the accused uprooted the pole saying it was not usual spot where the national flag used to be hoisted in the colony every year.
Three of them were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court II, Hozdurg, and remanded for 14 days in judicial custody.
