MADURAI: The use of mobile phones while driving is turning out to be one of the major causes of road accidents and senior police officials have been advised to create awareness among people to stop the practice, ADGP (Law and Order) S George said on Friday.“Drivers of cars and heavy vehicles will be sensitised against the use of hands-free mobile sets since engaging in a conversation is a serious distraction for safe driving,” the ADGP told Express. As part of the road safety awareness campaign, steps were being taken to educate the public on various issues pertaining to accident prevention, road safety and traffic discipline, he added. As the number of accidents and fatal accident cases on the NH and State Highways were on the rise, awareness programmes on emergency accident care measures will be organised in all districts. The services of traffic wardens, NSS volunteers would be utilised for effective traffic management and awareness campaigns, he said.
