Chennai: Killer lorry scares morning walkers

In an accident that came as a shocker to early morning walkers on Marina Beach in the city, a speeding lorry rammed a motorbike on Kamarajar Salai in the wee hours of Saturday, resulting in the death of a youth and injuries to another.

The speeding lorry broke a section of the barricade along the walkers’ pathway and came to a halt in one of the parks.

Police sources said S Hariharan (23) of Kodambakkam and N Pazhaniappan (22) of Mylapore, both working as associates in a private firm, were returning home from work in the early hours of Saturday on a motorbike. About 4.30 am, the bike was allegedly rammed by a brick lorry from behind on the stretch near Queen Mary’s College on Kamarajar Salai.

Eye witnesses from the nearby fishing hamlets said they rushed to the spot after hearing a loud bang. Both, the driver of the bike, Pazhaniappan, and the pillion rider, Hariharan, were thrown off the vehicle. While the former escaped with minor injuries, locals who called the ambulance said Hariharan fell under the wheels of the lorry, which reportedly ran over his head. He died on the spot.

Officials at the Anna Square Traffic Investigation said the driver, Lakshmanan (30) of Anakaputhur, is absconding. However, the sight of a lorry that had broken the barricades and landed on the walkway on the Marina shocked those, especially elders, who turned up for their routine morning walk on Saturday.
