PUDUCHERRY: Amidst criticism of the deterioration of law and order in the Union Territory, Chief Minister N Rangasamy met top police officials and conveyed his annoyance on the happenings at a function organised on the on the occasion of Indira Gandhi’s 27th death anniversary here a couple of days ago.He was upset that a demonstration and the road roko led by former chief minister V Vaithilingam and Congress cadre took place when he and his ministerial colleagues came to garland the Indira Gandhi statue at the Natesan Nagar.The Congress workers raised slogans against CM for failing to maintain law and order and also objected to the garlanding of the statue by education minister Kalyanasundaram. The sudden show of protest had caught even the police by surprise.The Chief Minister is believed to have questioned Deputy Inspector General of Police Atul Katiyar and Senior Superintendent of Police (law and order) VJ Chandran as to whether they had any prior knowledge of the protest plans by the Congress men, which included former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam, former ministers Pethaperumal, Namassivayam, Kandasamy and PCC chief A V Subramanian.The CM is believed to have told the top officials to take stern action against criminals and to prevent brutal murders. He is also believed to have told them that he knew very well about the police-criminals nexus and asked them to take action in this regard.It may be recalled that a few accused in a robbery case, alleged that policemen had taken away gold ornaments stolen by them.
