Civic Volunteer Arrested For Hitting Barricades In Drunk State Near Kolkata’s RG Kar Protest Site
Protests erupted in North Kolkata after an intoxicated civic volunteer crashed into a barricade set up by demonstrators

A civic volunteer has been arrested for hitting barricades put up by protesters blocking the Sinthi area near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in North Kolkata in an inebriated condition. The police action came after locals on Saturday morning held protests alleging no one stopped the unruly volunteer, who was a potential threat.

The incident occurred during a protest near RG Kar, where locals were painting banners and voicing their concerns. The volunteer, reportedly intoxicated, crashed into the barricade. Protesters claimed that the civic volunteer’s reckless behaviour was exacerbated by the police’s failure to intervene. They argued that the police should have stopped the volunteer before the situation escalated.

On 9 August, the police recovered the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor from the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Tensions rose as demonstrators expressed their frustration, highlighting a pattern of misconduct by civic volunteers in the tragic Kolkata rape-murder case involving civil volunteer Sanjoy Roy.

Several rallies and demonstrations take place in Kolkata on Fridays, protesting the rape-murder of a doctor, with political parties and several civil society organisations planning to take to the streets. Both the ruling TMC and opposition BJP hold demonstrations, as the protests enter their third week.
