My friend, now that you are quite close to your destination, let me tell you a secret. If I had revealed this secret to you earlier, perhaps you would never have started your journey at all! The secret is that nobody can meditate. Yes, that’s the truth! You really cannot meditate. Meditation must ‘happen’ to you. However, before you get too upset or disheartened about this, let me tell you the other half of the secret — meditation ‘happens’ to you on its own as soon as you are ready for it. And my friend, if you have been diligently implementing everything that you learnt till now on your journey, you are most certainly ‘ready’ for meditation to ‘happen’ to you. What do I mean when I say that you must be ‘ready’ for meditation to ‘happen’ to you? And how do you become ‘ready’ for it? To find the answer to this, let us go through a brief step by step review of your journey till now and take a quick look at some of the things you have accomplished to reach this state of inner and outer preparedness. This will also provide the base that you require for the next phase of our journey together.(1) A friend came up to me a few weeks ago and said, “I am meditating everyday because I want to increase my efficiency so that I can get a hike before my colleague does.” What a reason to meditate!!! The very first qualification for meditation is to have the right goal or destination that will truly empower you.And that destination, as you are now aware, is self-realisation. You have committed yourself to this destination by resolving, “I want to meditate. I want to meditate to realise myself. I want to enjoy peace, happiness and calmness for much longer in my life.”(2) When you began meditating, you understood that whenever you left your mind idle, it jumped around like a monkey. It leapt from one thought to another; from one feeling to another. The more you tried to control it, the more rebellious it became. When you started your journey, you learnt that the best way to tame your mind when you meditate is by watching its antics like a witness and allowing it to empty all the layers of stored thoughts inside you. So, every time you sat down to meditate, you calmly looked on as a witness and allowed your thoughts to go by. In this way you promoted the cleansing of your mind because you realised that it was the first step in meditation.first published:September 19, 2012, 09:13 ISTlast updated:September 19, 2012, 09:13 IST
