Cong leader gunned down in J&K
Jan Muhammad Kakroo, the party's Baramulla district president, was attacked returning after offering prayers.

Even as the Congress-PDP crisis deepens in Jammu and Kashmir and debate over troop withdrawal gathers steam, it seems terrorists are using the crises to strike at will.

Early on Sunday morning, a Congress party leader was shot dead by militants in north Kashmir's Baramulla. Jan Muhammad Kakroo, the party's Baramulla district president, was shot from a point-blank range while he was returning after offering prayers at a shrine in the town on Eid-e-Milad , 54 km from capital Srinagar.

"Kakroo died instantly," Station House officer, Baramulla police station Mohammed Abdullah Wani was quoted as saying by agencies. Police also said Kakroo's bodyguard Sona-ullah was seriously injured in the shootout.

Police and security forces rushed to the spot and the area was cordoned off and searched. But no one was arrested.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Kakroo was a close associate of senior Congress vice president and Member of Legislative Assembly, Abdul Gani

Vakil.

He is related to special secretary to the Chief Minister, Aijaz Ahmed Kakroo.

He is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter.

What's your reaction?
