MADURAI: Four inspectors in Madurai district have been transferred to other districts taking into account their involvement in the police firing at Chinthamani Junction on September 11.One of the policemen involved in the incident is Avaniyapuram inspector Gajendran who has now been transferred to Tirunelveli district. Similarly, Alanganallur inspector Chakkarai has been transferred to Dindigul, Kottampatti inspector Ramakrishnan to Dindigul and Peraiyur inspector Ilango to Virudhunagar.Police sources said Yanaimalai Othakadai Police inspector Velmurugan has been transferred as inspector to the office of Superintendent of Police, Madurai district.Dalit activists are calling for more action, especially in relation to the police firing at Paramakudi on the same day. On Sunday, the activists sought the setting up of a multi-member commission to probe into the incident. Madras High Court lawyer S Sathiyachandran said, “Paramakudi firing was a conspiracy executed to prevent Immanuel Sekaran memorial day from gaining momentum.” The State government has been stating that the police had to open fire to protect public property, alleged Yakkan of Tamil Nadu Writers Forum, Chennai. Witnesses say some policemen in civilian attire had torched the police vehicles after the violence broke out, he said.
