THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For all the bashing it has been generously receiving from the public for the stinking garbage, increasing potholes on roads and the absolute inertia it often slips into, the City Corporation is getting ready with an answer. Within a month, the Corporation would launch its own newsletter that will speak to the public on the various projects it has undertaken, just to make it clear that it is a hardworking local body. The newsletter, titled ‘Ente Nagaram’, was originally conceived to take the idea of decentralised waste management to the public. The Corporation is toying with the idea of launching a massive campaign for decentralised waste management to relieve the local people of Vilappilsala of their woes. The newsletter would be launched as part of the campaign, but would continue to remain the voice of the Corporation even after the campaign is wound up. ‘’There are presently limitations in the manner in which we communicate with the people. They are unaware of what we are doing, which is why the Corporation is often accused of being idle. We want to tell the public that we are doing such and such things for you, so that there is no misunderstanding. Moreover, it will help them learn about the services that we offer,’’ said S Pushpalatha, Health Standing Committee Chairperson. Initially, the focus would be on taking the message of decentralised garbage treatment to the 100 wards. The newsletter would elaborate on why the Corporation is asking the public to treat their own waste, what are the options before them and how the Corporation would help. According to officials, the newsletter would be promoted through the Health Inspector offices, councillors, Kudumbashree units, Corporation CDS and other networks available to the local body. The Mayor’s office is learnt to be engaged in drawing up the formula for a newsletter. Though nothing has been finalised regarding its period of publication, it is likely to be a weekly newsletter. According to sources, the Corporation has been thinking of bringing out a newsletter of its own for sometime now. Ever since the garbage issue got rotten and began to eat into its integrity, the idea was given more thrust. ‘’Not just the garbage issue, the birth-death registration facilities, the citizen charter, the technicalities of building permit, the payment of property tax - all these could be highlighted later. We would dedicate an editorial team for the purpose,’’ a Corporation official said. Though money has already been set aside for the newsletter in the campaign, how far it would turn into a weekly business remains to be seen.
