Sydney: Passengers who watch movies during flights but fail to watch it till the end because the plane lands can now avoid the disappointment as Australia's Qantas airlines is offering a first-of-its-kind download facility.
Qantas will next month start trials of the 'Q Streaming' application, which allows people to download movies and other content to iPads on one of its Boeing 767s, The Australian daily reported.
The airline will initially provide iPads to all 254 passengers on the plane, but officials hope ultimately to enable people to connect using their own WiFi-enabled devices.
They are also looking at allowing people to keep a movie on their device for 24 hours before it deletes itself.
"There's nothing more frustrating than getting part-way through a movie and the flight finishes, so we've got to work through the implication of that," executive manager for customer service Alison Webster was quoted as saying.
The service will be provided free of charge. It is not designed specifically for Apple but will also work with other tablets, and even smartphones powered by Android.
Qantas was, however, not concerned about people stealing the iPads because they would be locked to the aircraft system and useless outside the plane.
