CHENNAI: Taking a leaf from the on-screen heroics of his party mentor MGR, an AIADMK councillor caught a burglar, who had entered a locked house at Adambakkam on Tuesday. It was around noon when MR Naresh Kumar, councillor of ward 165, was talking to party workers and listening to the grievances of locals. A resident of Ilango Street in Nilamangai Nagar, he was in his office at the back of his house when a woman residing on the same street approached him and said that a man, who had been loitering outside a house opposite to hers, had now entered it. Kumar’s suspicions were aroused at once, as he was aware that the house owner Prabhu (35), a realtor, had left for Kodaikanal with his family on Monday. “I called him immediately to ascertain whether he had returned,” he said. When the realtor said that he was still at Kodaikanal, Kumar gathered the party workers and residents and rushed to Prabhu’s house after informing the police. “I posted all of them outside the compound wall, so that the burglar cannot escape,” he said.Kumar and a few others jumped into the compound and made their way to the front door. The lock was broken and a steel almirah was found open in the bedroom. “All the doors in the house were open except the bathroom, so we suspected that the thief was hiding there. When repeated pounding did not yield any result, the councillor used a crowbar and broke open the door. On entering, they found the bathroom empty and then looked up to find a small loft. “Initially, we thought it was too small for anybody to hide. But since there was no other escape route, we climbed up.” The burglar was lying down on the loft. With the help of the cops, he was brought down and taken to the police station. A bag containing jewellery was seized from him. As much as 18.5 sovereigns of gold were found among the loot. The burglar, who was identified as Balamurugan (35) of Tindivanam, was arrested.
