KOCHI: Avinash, a damage control simulator, was commissioned at the Naval Base the other day by Vice-Admiral K N Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command.This is the second damage control simulator under the Southern Naval Command, after the one installed at INS Shivaji at Lonavala, in Maharashtra. Damage control simulators are used to provide training to fight damage on board warships. Avinash is a three-deck ship-like structure which can simulate various types of leaks, high pressure pipe bursts and power failure as a result of possible torpedo or missile hit.The structure also simulates movement of the ship in rough seas using microprocessor-based hydraulic power as they fight and contain the simulated damage.The facility also has arrangements for monitoring the trainees after initiating various scenarios as well as to record videos and review the actions of trainees. The damage control simulator has been constructed by Goa Shipyard Ltd at a cost of Rs 29 crore.
