PALAKKAD: As Onam and Ramzan are near, artistes like Suresh alias Davinchi Suresh of Kodungaloor have their hands full. Commercial establishments, especially the jewellery and textile showrooms, are making a beeline for Suresh.“There may be art directors who create beautiful pieces of art but the peculiarity of my work “Poorakazhcha” is that there is a movement of the trunk, head and ears of the elephants, persons seated and standing above it fanning the “venchamaram” and those holding the parasols. It is these movements which ensure demand for my works,” says Suresh. “Usually I do a single work in a year, but this time I finished the work of three Poorakazhchas and also that of a Dasavatharam. My works are booked in advance and they are given on rent. It takes four months to complete a work and costs around Rs 5 to 6 lakh. The rent for a day is Rs 3,000,“ says Suresh. “I do not pose competition to anyone. Others make small works while mine is of a large size. The Dasavatharam is 60-feet long. It will be displayed during this Onam at the Kummatti festivities in Thrissur. The King Kong and the tiger works were 25-feet tall, the Maveli work, displayed in front of a textile showroom in Kochi, was 35-feet tall and the Poorkazhcha was also 23-feet tall,” said Suresh. My earlier works included that of a dinosaur, a large-sized single elephant and that of an anaconda. The Maveli work is sometimes converted into a chimpanzee and that of a Santa Claus during Christmas with some modifications, he adds. Suresh, 36, says that earlier he was a mimicry artiste and one who undertook drawing and painting works for hoardings.“The turning point in my life came after seeing a film scripted by the late Lohithadas “Veendum chilla vettukaryangal” in which he urges the youth to take up new avenues. After watching that movie I left mimicry and took up this work which has stood me in good stead now”. Suresh points out that he used to display his work in the Gulf countries also. The king kong, which was taken to Quatar for the inauguration of a hyper market, is now held up for the past four months in a ship since one of the papers went missing. The Poorakazhcha was displayed at the Nehru Trophy Boat Race venue.Though Suresh has not seen director Lohithadas personally, he visits his house in Lakkidi every year and had presented a figure of the director made of fibre. During the shooting of the Siddique-directed Kavalan in Ottapalam, Suresh created a figure of the hero Vijay in rubber which was inaugurated by the actor himself. The figures of Malayalam actors also are placed near the large works, he said.
