D-Day nears? Bachchans buying saris
The Bachchans are taking one step at a time towards the big day. Else, why will Big B buy 11 Banarasi saris in a day?

New Delhi: By all accounts, it seems the Bachchans are taking one step at a time towards the big day. Else, why will Amitabh Bachchan buy 11 Banarasi saris in a day?

While all the rumours about a temple marriage between Bollywood actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai at Varanasi have all proved to be hoax on Monday, the latest buzz is that the Bachchans bought 11 Banarasi saris of different hues during their stay in Varanasi.

Just two days after the media fest was over in Varanasi as soon as the Bachchans left for Mumbai – with Aishwarya in tow – the owners of a prominent retail store revealed the details of the Bachchans’ sari shopping spree in the temple town, which is also famous for its silk.

If the trader’s account is to be believed, the Bachchans bought as many as 11 saris of different hues – including Banarasi Jamawar, Banarasi Katan and Khaddi georgette, worth Rs 50,000. The shop-owner also claims that the “the saris were procured presumably for Aishwarya Rai."

By the way, the saris were worth just between Rs 3,500 and Rs 5,500. There lies a catch though. Will Bollywood’s first family use Banarasi saris worth just Rs 5,500 for the marriage of their only son?

While Aishwarya Rai’s presence in what was described as Bachchans’ family function at Varanasi itself was enough indication of the former Miss World’s growing proximity to the family, it was in fact the first time that Rai took part in a Bachchan family-only event.

And now, the sari-shopping spree adds some substance to speculation that the two are indeed close to getting married.

In Varanasi, the Bachchans toured the famous Kashi Vishwanath and Sankat Mochan temples and participated in the traditional Hindu prayer rituals. The family apparently left for Agra after the rituals.
