Delhi CM okays hike in water tariff
The hike in water charges is to meet the revenue shortfall of the DJB.

New Delhi: After hikes in metro and bus fares, Delhiites will now have to shell out more for water charges with the city government today deciding to increase the tariff for the commodity.

The board meeting of Delhi Jal Board, chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, approved the increase in water charges to meet the increasing revenue shortfall of the cash-strapped board.

"We have decided to increase the water charges," Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said without elaborating on the new structure.

DJB Chief Executive Officer Ramesh Negi said the new charges will be announced tomorrow as some nitty gritties are yet to be finalised.

"The slabs and rates have not been finalised yet. We will announce it tomorrow," he said after the meeting. Another senior official said the new rate will come into force from January next.

Sources said Rs 2 would be charged per kilo litre of water for usage in the range of one kilo litre to 10 kilo litre.

For usages between 11 kilo litre to 20 kilo litre, the proposed tariff would be in the range of Rs four to Rs seven per kilo litre while Rs 12 would be charged per kilolitre for usages in the range of 20 to 30 kilolitre.

They said DJB proposes to charge Rs 15 per kilo litre for usage above 30 kilo litre.

For commercial use, the Rs 10 has been proposed per kilo litre for usages upto 10 kilo litre while Rs 25 per kilo litre is likely to be charged for usages in the range of 10 to 25 kilo litre.

The proposed tariff for usages in the range of 25 to 50 kilo litre is likely to be Rs 50 per kilo litre while Rs 80 has been proposed per kilo litre for usages in the range of 50 to 100 kilo litre.

A DJB official claimed that the proposed hike is still less than water tariff being charged in many other states.

The DJB has been pressing for hike in water charges for quite some time to meet its ever increasing operational cost.
