NEW DELHI: Call it a perfect Diwali gift for beleaguered DMK chief M Karunanidhi, if you will. On a day when the CBI booked a couple more of his close relatives — grandnephews Dayanidhi and Kalanidhi Maran — for their alleged role in the controversial Maxis-Aircel telecom deal, it decided to facilitate the bail of his daughter, Kanimozhi, by not opposing it. The Rajya Sabha MP has been in Tihar Jail since May 20 after being chargesheeted in the 2G spectrum scam by the CBI. Apart from her, Karim Morani, CEO of Cineyug Flims and Surendera Pipara, a senior executive of Anil Ambani’s ADAG group, are expected to get lenient treatment. The agency is expected to cite ‘humanitarian’ grounds for offering relief. While Kanimozhi may get relief on grounds of gender, for the other two it will be ‘medical grounds’, as both suffers from serious ailments.A top CBI official said the decision not to oppose bail of the trio was taken because of the long delay in completing the process of framing charges against them in the trial court. Their bail applications are likely to be heard by the trial court on October 17, if the process of framing charges is complete. As per the Supreme Court’s direction while rejecting Kanimozhi’s bail plea, the court could consider the bail pleas only after charges are framed.
