DMK councillors evicted for creating ruckus

CHENNAI: Opposition DMK Councillors at the Chennai Corporation’s council meet on Wednesday were evicted en masse after they held vociferous protests in the Well of the House against a remark on former mayor Ma Subramanian. After repeated warnings, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy ordered the DMK members to leave the House so that the Council could carry on with business.It started when Mayor Duraisamy spoke about the dubious stand of the previous DMK-led regime in evaluating property tax in the city, particularly pertaining to IT parks in the city.When the Mayor, without using former Mayor M Subramanian’s name, remarked that ‘masu’ has brought in huge ‘masu’ (dirt) in the civic body and the new AIADMK-led administration is now clearing it, all DMK councillors objected to the remarks. Former Mayor Ma Subramanian is also referred as Ma Su in political circles.Irked over the remark made by the Mayor, all DMK councillors led by their leader in the Corporation Subash Chandra Bose gathered in front of the Mayor’s chair and began arguing with him for making the referrence.Thought the Mayor ordered them to return to their seats and register their concerns, the DMK councillors did not oblige and went on with their protest in the Well of the House.The Mayor then ordered eviction of all the agitating DMK members.
