VELLORE:  A Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)  functionary Kamalakannan was found dead in a pool of blood near the Nerkunthi bypass road in Vaniyambadi on Mo nday morning with multiple injuries and a slashed neck. The 45-year-old realtor and alleged loan-shark appeared to have just left the home of his mistress Kokila. Vellore DIG H Jayaram who inspected the crime scene along with ADSP Pattabi  believed the murder was premediated as the killers seemed to have known that Kamalakannan visited Kokila’s house every morning before dawn before leaving to his home in Perumalpet where he lived with wife Naveenakumari (42) and children Santhini (21) and Vignesh (17). The killers are believed to have struck as he left Kokila’s house sometime between 5 and 6 am. Judging by the trail of blood, police concluded that he had been chased briefly, before being killed. Kamalakannan had worked with the DMK for the better part of the last two decades, holding posts such as vice-president of  the party’s District Student Wing and as Vaniyambadi Town Secretary. Party sources said Kannan had been expelled from the party over his involvement in “katta pan chayats”. He is believed to have rejoined the party ahead of the recent assembly polls after being cleared of police charges pending against him since 1995. As news of Kamalakannan’s murder spread, police sources said two more women, Latha and Selvi, arrived at the police station claiming to have been his mistresses. Sources said the police had established that he had standing affairs with three widowed women in Vaniyambadi apart from Kokila.Vaniyambadi Town Police who arrived at the crime scene first found a scooter that the murderers may have used abandoned by the highway. “The vehicles documents were found nearby torn to shreds,” said a police source. Pieces of bond paper resembling ‘agreement’ documents were also found shredded in the pile. “We are working on piecing them together to try and find the identity of the murderers,” said Pattabi. Three special police teams, sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts are working on solving the murder.
