The Kerala Congress would not support land encroachment or forest degradation in any form, but would not run away from protecting the interests of genuine farmers, according to Finance Minister K M Mani.
Asked why the group of young Congress MLAs and even the Forest Minister are not convinced of facts and are making a hue and cry, Mani said all are capable of understanding matters properly. “The Kerala Congress policy on land issues differentiating encroachers and true farmers, which is also the policy of the UDF, is on a broader agrarian context. The policy is a `kashayam’ (ayurvedic concoction) to solve all land issues, including Nelliampathy,” Mani said. “By firing a shot at Nelliampathy, attempts should not be there to target all farmers in the state,” he insisted.
He also said that the tenure of the legally firm lease agreements should be extended, which was approved by the LDF government also. On the role of Government Chief Whip P C George in precipitating the Nelliampathy issue he felt sorry for all the misgivings.
“The party stand will be spelt out by me in the capacity of chairman and none else,” he asserted and played down the Thrissur vigilance court’s directive to probe a complaint against him and George. “All allegations are false, baseless and intended to malign me. I welcome the probe, he said.
