THIRUVANATHAPURAM: There are no two opinions about Adaminte Makan Abu, its lead actor Salim Kumar and the man who wrote the score for the film, Isaac Thomas Kottukapally. The three, who had struck gold at the 58th National Film Awards, have been adjudged the best by the State film award jury too.M T Vasudevan Nair’s Nirmalyam (1973) and G Aravindan’s Chidambaram (1986) are the only other Malayalam films that got this distinction.Salim Kumar is the seventh Malayalam actor, and the first comedian, to win the national and state best actor award the same year. The elite list include: P J Antony, Bharath Gopy, Premji, Mammootty, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi.Jury chairman Buddhadeb Dasgupta was profuse in his praise for Salim Kumar.“I was overwhelmed. For the first 10-15 minutes I couldn’t believe my eyes.I had seen the same person in comedy roles in some other films that came up for our consideration. This performance was overwhelming. He overshadowed everyone else.” Isaac Thomas is the first Malayalam music director in history to win both national and state awards simultaneously. The debutant director of Adaminte Makan Abu, Salim Ahmed, also won the award for the best scriptwriter.Elektra, the film thrown out of contention by the national film jury, won Syamaprasad the award for best direction.“It was unfortunate that Elektra was not considered worthy of contention by the national jury,” Buddhadeb said.Another film trampled upon by the national jury, T D Dasan Standard VI B, won two awards: best debutant director for Mohan Raghavan and best second actor for Biju Menon.Gaddama, Kamal’s sensitive tale of young housemaids suffering in Gulf countries, won Kavya Madhavan the award for the best actress.
