BANGALORE: One of the biggest cons of a rapidly developing city like Bangalore is the number of vehicles that are added to the roads everyday.Once known as a pensioner’s paradise, the city has grown and developed at an exponential rate.Needless to say, with the growth came its own set of disadvantages.Over the years the city now seems to have become accustomed to the snail pace vehicular movement and the jams that follow, Brigade Road is a classic example of the situation. A commercial and social hub, the road witnesses a huge number of vehicles every single day. Those who are lucky find a spot to park their vehicles while the rest either keep driving in circles in a desperate attempt to find a narrow spot or let their vehicles idle as close to the store as possible, even though double parking is prohibited there. These vehicles are one of the major reasons for traffic jams on the road.“Finding parking on Brigade Road is like finding a needle in a hay stack.Even on a regular day the parking is always full.As a result, many people double park which results in bad traffic jams and at times road rage as well,” said Vishal a shopper.Driti another shopper agreed with Vishal’s opinion and also added that as the cars parked on Brigade Road begin pulling out of their parking spots, the traffic behind comes to a stand still.“There have been times when the pile up has been so bad that the traffic trails stretched beyond Cauvery signal on MG Road.As a result those who were coming from Kamaraja Road towards Brigade Road had to wait at the Cauvery signal for almost 10 to 15 minutes,” she said.According to Muthana, DCP East, the traffic police is doing their best to avoid such instances of double parking.“Everyday we have plenty of cases that are slapped on drivers who indulge in double parking. They are fined Rs. 100 for the offence. However, despite our attempts, very often people still park in the same manner,” he informed. Muthana seemed furious at the recklessness of such drivers.“Those who come to Brigade Road are well educated people. They should know better than to park in spots that are prohibited and can cause inconvenience to others. Their actions puts many in distress,” he said. The DCP agreed to the fact that there is a considerable lack of space for parking, but he also asserted that one can find other parking locations as well. “There are a few spots around Brigade Road where people can park their two-wheelers and four-wheelers.For example the Public Utility Building (PUB), there is ample space for parking there,” he said. Apart from PUB, there is paid parking available opposite opera theatre as well.
