SALEM : Over Rs 1.5 lakh in cash was seized from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Sankagiri near here in a dusk-to-dawn raid by the officials of the Department of Vigilance and Anti- Corruption (DVAC).The DVAC sleuths entered the office around 5.30 pm on Tuesday and continued with their search till 5 am on Wednesday. The raiding team had closed the office doors from inside. The officials said the search was carried out after several complaints of the RTO staff taking bribes emerged. The officials were allegedly accepting bribes through middlemen. Brokers, officials, staff and the public who came to the RTO were trapped inside as the officials made a sudden and unexpected entry and locked the doors. Sleuths also received on the spot complaints from the public. There was enough drama when people unearthed bundles of Rs 100, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from behind the toilet. Sleuths also found cash thrown behind the cupboards of the office. The team interrogated Regional Transport Officer Selvam, and cases were booked against 12. In all, Rs 1,60,710 was seized.
