Amid rising tensions, Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari, the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, along with the General Officer Commanding, Spear Corps, Lt Gen HS Sahi, visited Manipur on Tuesday and undertook a comprehensive review of the security situation.
The top military officers engaged in discussions with key stakeholders, emphasizing the need to restore normalcy in the state.
Lt Gen Tiwari also met with Governor Anusuiya Uikey to deliberate on the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur.
The discussions focused on strategies to address the crisis and pave the way for a swift return to normalcy.
Governor Uikey commended the Indian Army and Assam Rifles (AR) for their continuous efforts in restoring peace and maintaining security in the state, as per an official statement.
Furthermore, Lt General HS Sahi conducted a comprehensive security review in Manipur’s border town of Moreh.
The visit was aimed at enhancing coordination, understanding ground realities, and fostering open communication channels between military leadership and operational units.
Moreh, which is situated at the border of Mynmar-Manipur, continues to witness gun battles between suspected militants and the security forces. It is a kuki area and there have been earlier demands to withdraw Manipur police forces and bring in central forces.
Lt Gen Sahi engaged with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to discuss various aspects for the early restoration of normalcy.
These developments unfolded as a joint team of Assam Rifles and state police recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition in Churachandpur district.
The seized items included 13 weapons, such as a 9mm Carbine and pistol, five Single-barrel rifles, a tear gas gun, eight hand grenades, and other war-like stores. The recovery is a testament to the joint efforts of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police in maintaining security.
On the other hand, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, addressing a state function in Imphal, underscored the Central government’s support for Manipur.
He reiterated that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has declared the present crisis in the state as an act of war against the Government of India.
The chief minister praised the joint security efforts of Assam Rifles, BSF, and Manipur police commandos in countering militant attacks at Moreh.
“In Moreh, some militants attacked state forces and central security as well. It is a primary duty for the state to maintain peace in the region. Both central forces, Assam rifles, BSF and state forces are working together to stop the militants. Yesterday evening militants attacked both the state as well as central forces. Massive combing operation is going on at Moreh right now,” the CM said.
Moreh, the international border trading town, has witnessed an upsurge in violence, with suspected Kuki-Chin militants launching intense attacks on security forces.
The incidents have resulted in injuries to at least eight security personnel, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to restore peace in the region.
