CHENNAI: A driver attacked and inflicted knife injuries on his septuagenarian employer and wife and later hanged self, at Perumbur on Sunday. The elderly man, who was admitted to a private hospital, is critical, while the woman is out of danger. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sembium) R Vijayaraghavan told Express that Devassy (70) and Maggy (65), natives of Kerala, resided at Perambur. Devassy had been running an ice factory in Moolakadai before his retirement. The family had temporarily shifted to a rented house on St Mary’s Road. Their son Jose Sebastian (28) and his wife lived with them. Of late, Devassy had been afflicted with speech inability, while hiswife was a paralysis patient. The septuagenarian owned three cars and Murthy (48), his driver, had been with him for the last 25 years, the ACP said. A resident of Ramanan Nagar in Perambur, Murthy was reportedly inebriated when he came to the couple’s house. “He seemed to have had some problem at home before he came,” the police officer said. The couple tried to persuade Murthy to go to his house, saying that their son Jose Sebastian would call him later. But the driver refused to go. Jose, who came home around 7 pm, also tried to persuade the driver, but in vain. Later, he went out for a walk with his pregnant wife. The couple and the driver were left alone at the house, when they again tried to make Murthy go home. In a drunken rage, Murthy took a knife and stabbed both of them. He then hanged himself in the bedroom with a telephone wire. The incident was reported by Jose when he returned home. On breaking open the door, he found his parents seriously injured and the driver’s body in the bedroom. Devassy was rushed to a private hospital on Greams Road, where his condition remained serious. Maggy, who suffered cut injuries on her nose, was out of danger. Murthy’s body was sent to the KMC hospital. The Sembium police have registered a case.
