There was a sharp decline in the number of people from the Northeast leaving Bangalore on Saturday but there was no let-up in the numbers of those fleeing Chennai and Pune.

As against 12,966 people who left Bangalore on Friday, only 350 left the city on Saturday. Railways, which operated eight special trains to Guwahati since Wednesday, did not operate any special train on Saturday. This led to protests by around 300 people, who were told to take the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express that left at 8 pm with three extra coaches.

Meanwhile, Bangalore police arrested 16 people for sending “false” SMSes.

So far, 15 cases have been registered and the accused also include some who allegedly attacked and threatened a few people from the Northeast, according to Bangalore Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji.

DG and IGP Lalrokhuma Pachuau said the exodus of people from the Northeast subsided on Saturday. “We have made some progress. The situation is normal,” Pachuau said. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar in Delhi also said the situation in Bangalore was normal.

As a precaution, Central Reserve Police Force and Rapid Action Force platoons have been deployed.

“Senior officers will be on rounds till 2 am. Patrolling has been intensified. More Hoysalas and Cheetah vehicles have been deployed in sensitive zones,” Mirji said.

The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has postponed the undergraduate examinations that were scheduled from August 23.

Meanwhile, Manipur has decided to send its DIG Clay Khongsai to Karnataka.

Two special trains from Bangalore arrived on Saturday at Guwahati carrying around 1,700 people, who said the decision to return was driven by rumours rather than any physical threat.

“Nobody threatened me but there were lots of rumours,” said Niranjan Mushahary, working for a private firm in Bangalore.

Meanwhile, the CBI announced a cash reward of up to Rs 1 lakh for information leading to identification or arrest of perpetrators of the Assam violence.
