Ex-Punjab CM's key man arrested
Amarinder Singh’s media advisor Bharatinder Singh Chahal has been arrested in the Ludhiana City Centre scam case.

Ludhiana: Punjab's former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s media advisor was arrested in Ludhiana late Sunday night for his alleged role in the Ludhiana City Centre scam case.

Bharatinder Singh Chahal who is a co-accused along with the former CM in the scam was summoned to the Vigilance Bureau office on Sunday and was later arrested with four of his close family relatives. Police charged him with attempt to murder, extortion and land grabbing. Chahal and his supporters allegedly roughed up Harchand Singh, a resident of Daad village, for his land on June 3.

“Harchand Singh told us that Chahal kept asking for his land. When he refused to give away Chahal and his supporters surrounded and threatened him,” said SP, Punjab Police Harish Kumar.

Chahal's lawyers say the police have violated a court order by arresting him. The Punjab High Court had said that Chahal was to be given a notice of 4 days before he was arrested in any case.

“Chahal was interrogated by the police. But after the interrogation was over, instead of letting him exit from the main gate the cops called a police jeep from the back gate and took him to bureau office. They brought a police car in and took him away in that,” said T S Sood, Chahal's Lawyer.

Chahal has been questioned earlier in the Ludhiana city centre scam, in which Amarinder Singh is being investigated for allegedly receiving kickbacks for the award of a construction contract. Chahal's reputation as Amrinder's right-hand man may be a thing of the past, but it could also hold the clue to his sudden arrest.
