CHENNAI: A retired senior railway ticket reservation official was arrested for unauthorised booking and sale of tatkal tickets, here on Tuesday.Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel nabbed retired Chief Reservations Supervisor Rengaraj at the Computerised Reservation Centre in Mambalam on Tuesday morning when he was engaged in unauthorised booking of tatkal tickets.Acting on the directions of S R Gandhi, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Chennai Division, Southern Railway, a team headed by Mambalam Sub-Inspector S Maharajan nabbed the accused in a joint operation with the Crime Intelligence Bureau of the RPF.According to official sources, Rengaraj took to unauthorised booking of tatkal tickets after superannuating early this year. “He is an experienced officer who served the Railways for almost 40 years. Not satisfied with the amount of pension he was receiving, he turned into a tout at the very same reservation centre he was heading for five years,” the sources added.Despite being aware of the stringent rules for booking tatkal tickets, Rengaraj began reserving tickets unauthorisedly, making it a business for survival. Exerting influence at the booking counter, the accused had booked tatkal tickets for unknown persons and reportedly charged `100 as commission for each confirmed ticket.Rengaraj was booked under Section 143(1)(b) of Railways Act (Purchases or sells or attempts to purchase or sell tickets with a view to carrying on any such business either by himself or by any other person). He was produced in a city court and remanded to 15 days judicial custody.
